THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Wonderfully written and great photos of how this Christian writer found God in her pre-dawn morning stroll. . .

dianegates's avatarMOVING THE ANCIENT BOUNDARIES

The chill of a predawn ocean breeze swept across the sand as I made my way over the dunes and onto the South Carolina beach last week. The only sound—the rhythmic rippling of gentle waves breaking along the shoreline.

Alone in the darkness, dwarfed, and awed by the anticipated majesty of this morning concert ready to fill the heavens with God’s created light, I waited. But for the moment the clouds, the sand, and the ocean were smoky gray.DSCF3287

Dull. Flat. Lifeless.

I snapped the first photo.

DSCF3291A tinge of blue washed across the expanse above my head, scattering the remnants of darkness like pulled strands of cotton candy.

Gray clouds soaked up the coming lights of heaven and reflected the soon-to-be seen splendor of the sun’s march to the line between sea and sky.DSCF3306 Like turning up the rheostat of a chandelier from dimmer to lighter and brighter, the…

He was wandering the pet store, peering into the cages, strolling the aisles. He was dirty, tattooed and skinny with disheveled hair and unshaven chin. A  little girl crouched as she watched a white mouse on a wheel. When he stopped near her, I sucked in my breath. She stood up and ran down the aisle to her mom. He turned and went down another aisle. Then he meandered down another, with his hands laced behind his back. No cart, no basket.

Should I notify the clerks? Was he a pedophile, or just a hobo seeking the air-conditioned relief on a hot and humid Texas day?question

Last Sunday, I stopped for gas on the way back from a workshop 5 hours away. The convenience store was busy – the kind with gas pumps, a fast food restaurant, rows upon rows of food and drink choices, and of course, clean restrooms.  It was a buzzing hive of people dashing in and out.

He sat in a wheel chair with one leg amputated above the knee. His beard was yellowish white and scrawny. He had a big plastic cup of soda.  Someone had given it to him or he had bought it.  Yet he sat with his chin in hs hand, watching everyone else scurrying in and out. I tried to catch his eye to smile, but he looked down and away.  Was he waiting for someone? He looked so despondent. Should I have done more?

As a single woman – do I trust God to protect me as I reach out to minister to these lost men? How would I do that? Do I just walk away and mind my own business like everyone else- how can I do that? These invisible people were no longer invisible to me.

Instead, both times, I got in my car and bowed my head. I prayed for God to send someone to touch their hearts and meet their needs. I prayed for them to believe in Christ and for Him to give them a sense of worth and belonging. I prayed for them to be loved. Was that enough? Did I wimp out of doing God’s will? I wasn’t sure.

They both came to mind this morning. So I prayed again. But I also prayed for myself- and the guilt I felt for not having done something. So many lost and hurting people out there… what can I do about it?

But wait- I did do something. I lifted them up to my Father in Heaven who loves them. It’s a start- a good start.

Who will God place in your path who needs your prayer today?  Will that be enough?

I’d like your comments and thoughts.

When the fires of life’s demands are blazing around you, and the corruption of the world is lapping at your hands and feet and threatening to suffocate you – how do you react?

Recall the three young men – Shadrack, Meshach and Abdenego ? Their story is found in the third chapter of the Book of Daniel. They refused to denounce their faith so the king threw then into the fiery furnace. At first they crouched down. But, instead of the fires consuming them, the Lord came and protected them from the flames. Together, they walked in it and through it.

The Lord promised He would never forsake us (Psalm 37;28), and that He is with us until the end of the ages. (Matthew 28:20). Even when we feel the heat of evil and worldliness flickering around us, He is always present.

We just need to seek Him.  If we cry, “Daddy!?,” He will come. He will take our hand, and walk us through the situation, or if we are too weak to walk, like a heroic fireman, He will carry us out.

As Natalie Grant, and others, sing in the song, In Christ Alone, there is no power of hell nor scheme off man that will ever pluck us from God’s mighty and loving hands.  But even more than that, His holy fire protects us.

In the Texas Hill Country, when a brush fire forms, the volunteers often start a barrier fire in it’s path to thwart it’s  spread.

The fire of the Holy Spirit is stronger than any other fire. He will thwart any scorches of hell or schemes of the secular world from consuming our souls once we ask Him into our hearts. We may feel the heat, but we won’t be eternally singed.  So walk- heh, why not dance?  You have a covering of holy asbestos.

In the midst of the flames, let people know you are “on fire” for Jesus.

Praise the LORD, everything he has created, everything in all his kingdom. Let all that I am praise the LORD. Psalm 103:22

All of creation praises the Lord – won’t you today?

Drop the load you are bearing.

Lift up your hands and lift your spirits.

You’ve carried it enough- time to give it to God.

this is a partial reblog from Guy Saffold, a Canadian pastor:

“That’s it!” I said, “I can’t do this anymore!”

God spoke to me clearly through 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. Words that struck like a hammer blow confronted my sour attitude:

  • “Rejoice always!“ Yes – at all times.
  • “Pray continually!” Yes – without stopping.
  • “Give thanks in all circumstances!” Yes – even through these excruciating circumstances.

These verses made no room for my bitterness.

What was an even bigger breakthrough for me was the realization that this change in attitude is “God’s will for me in Christ Jesus.” For all the times I wondered about God’s will, here it was: rejoice, pray, and give thanks. Always. Continually. In all circumstances. I was faced with an inescapable choice between my negative outlook and God’s will for my life.”

downloadShe came into the church office with worried eyes. “I lost my pearl earring Sunday during Church.”  She’d discovered it when she got home. After searching her apartment and car, yesterday she had come back up to  hunt around her pew and  still couldn’t find it.  I looked as well- nothing.  Today, when our janitorial service came, I asked them to keep an eye out for it. Instead of using their industrial vacuums, they painstakingly dry mopped the  whole church building with giant cloths. They found it!  I can still hear the joyous relief in her voice over the phone when I told her.

We are all pearls of preciousness to our Lord. He will search us out and find us when we are lost. Like our dear janitors, He will slowly and carefully hunt, always watchful.

My friend was unsuccessful in finding her earring and so was I. But I did two things  – I prayed about it and I asked the professionals to search for me.

If you know  someone who is lost, you may not have the resources to help them find their way back again. Remember this story. Our loving Lord knows what to do. Hand the job over to Him and pray.  After all, He paid the price for all of us to be found.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.  When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.” Matthew 13:45-46

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????On Sunday, Anglican Bishop Fanuel Magangani  of Northern Malawi visited my church. He told us that in Africa, people still have a superstitious nature. It is easy for them to see demons with red faces and horns, and to have visions of angels in glowing white. It is not a leap of faith for them to see miraculous healing taking place. In fact, our missionary team just came back from there about six weeks ago and told us how they’d been  vessels of healing, both physically and spiritually.

The Bishop said that in more technologically modern countries, the demons must be more clever. Because we are so scientific and logical in thought, the devil must find other ways to fool us. Subtle ways that seems logical, like the stories in the Bible could never have scientifically happened. They must be metaphors.  Or, we need to reinterpret Biblical Truths to fit our modern era. Even that logically, the devil doesn’t exist. It is all neuro-stimuli and hormone balances in our brains.

He smiled and said, “Here in your country, the devil wears a business suit.”

Think about that for a minute. I have – a lot.

I don’t think he was slamming modern business men and women. I think he was saying that by wearing a suit,  a person often exudes authority and a successful lifestyle, A person called “a suit” is expected to be knowledgeable, and perhaps, to be admired.  They represent power, wealth, and the logical, educated mind. They are also innovative, clever, and yes, they can step on backs as they climb the ladder to success – which is more and more an admirable achievement in the business world today.  But, that type of attitude is very ‘me-centered”  and relies on one’s own gumption and smarts. It can also stir up emotions of greed, envy and jealousy. That is fertile ground for the devil.

But, Christian bushiness men and women wear suits as well.  Each day they live out their lives trying to be obedient to Christ.  Their actions portray trustworthiness, honor, fair dealing and giving sacrificially of their time and talents.  They will take off their coat to help a widow change a flat tire, or give half the suits in their closets for the unemployed to  dress well for an interview.  They will whip out their checkbook as they blink back a tear when they hear a missionary’s testimony and roll up their sleeves to serve in a soup kitchen

The difference? Under their suit is the armor of God.  And, it is drenched in the Blood of the Lamb.  Take to heart what Paul says in Ephesians 4:22-24:  put off your old self,  which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,  and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,  and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

No matter if you wear a name on your shirt or have it on the corner office door, being Christ in today’s business world isn’t easy. There are a lot of demons out there wearing suits (and, by the way,  blue collar uniforms and jeans  as well).  Be sure to dress in your armor each morning before you head out the door. And, if you display a Fish symbol on your business cards, your lapel or your car, then please act the way Jesus would as much as possible in public and in private. Don’t give the devil a chance.

There it  was – in the middle of Rebekah and Isaac’s story in Genesis 25. Verse 22 suddenly became bolded and two fonts bigger in my mind.

The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the LORD.

Okay Guys –  even though this is about Rebekah’s pregnancy, don’t click off just yet. This is about any idea, dream, passion or hope that is growing inside of you, waiting to be born – whether you are a man or woman, child or senior citizen.

How many of us struggle with our deepest desire – the one we are sure is God-given? We wonder, if I am following Your ways Lord, why is this so hard? Why the roadblocks, the difficulties, the jostling inside of my gut? Why is this happening to me?

As a Christian writer, I can tell you this is a common story. We have a message that is itching to come out. A Divine revelation we know we are called upon to share. But no agent looks our way and we get rejection after rejection from publishers. Or, once we are published, we get an unkind review , or our book only sells 20 copies that month.  Why is this happening to me, Lord?

If you have a dream in formation, don’t be impatient with the growth process. When the timing is right, it will come forth. And yes, there may be pain. But there will also be joy.

Do as Rebekah did – go, inquire of the Lord. You just may be surprised at His response. She certainly was!

And truth be told, if this dream or desire is of God, it will come forth when He deems it. So be a willing vessel in the meantime. Your dream is not the only thing growing inside of you, so is your walk with the Lord. Oh, that’s why this is happening to me.

A blog I follow (iChristian http://steverebus.com/) gives a quote for the day. Recently, this one was from John Calvin, a famous Protestant reformer and theologian who lived in the 1500’s.                                   There is no place for faith if we expect God to immediately fulfill His promises.

And to think he wrote that 500 years ago – back in the slooowwwer days before modern technology was even a future thought. Look at us today!

We are such a microwave society.  We want things now.

We sigh when we get someone’s voice mail or they don’t text us back within a minute.

We tap the steering wheel with our fingers if the red light doesn’t change within 30 seconds, or huff into our collars if there are two people in line ahead of us at the checkout counter.

If our computer takes more than a few seconds to respond to our search, it must have a virus, right?

How often do we expect our prayers to be answered before we get up off our knees, and then when it doesn’t, assume God is not listening?

Did you know the word “WAIT” is used almost 300 times in the Bible. I think God knows waiting is not a human virtue. It’s hard to wait when your are a mortal confined to only knowing the here and now.

The next time your faith is on the edge of morphing into impatience, read one of these verses:

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. Psalm 27:13-14

I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. Psalm 130:5

But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.  Micah 7:7

“In our living room we have a blue recliner. We’ve had it for years, and it’s my favorite place of contemplation, naps and relaxation. One day I sat on my chair and something fell off. Upon investigation, I discovered a bolt had gradually come unscrewed over time. Fortunately, with merely a few adjustments, it was back in its full glory.

If only life was that simple.

dreamstimefree_16398I asked myself: are there areas of my life that are gradually slipping? No one wakes up and says, “I think I’ll become unhealthy… go into debt… destroy my relationships … or grow distant from God”. Yet, it happens; and unlike my chair, often it is not a simple fix….”
